EDUCATION ABOVE ALL - CALLING ATTENDANCE, DIR. NATHAN LONG, PROD. MATT MAGER ATP - ALEXA, Zeiss Super Speed MIIIs
We wanted to anchor the film in a photojournalistic world, framing in 4:3, placing our subjects firmly in their reality. In such a short spot, economy of storytelling is everything, so we needed our frames to be rich in subtext, suggesting the larger off-camera world - greatly helped of course by the production design and powerful soundscape. Given the subject matter, it was more important than ever not to draw attention to the cinematography but to only deploy what best served the characters and immersed the viewer. Free from the limitations of photography we therefore built in subtle cinematic camera moves and sometimes dramatic lighting to elevate our portraits but also evoke different environments around the world, since we had just one location to shoot everything. Colourist Karol Cybulski at Cheat then did an amazing job honing the look and building on the atmosphere we had created.
